The Potatoe Warehouses

Yes, it says the “Potatoe Warehouses.” Dan Quayle can stand proud in Manawa.

I have no idea which building or buildings in this photo are supposed to be the potato warehouses. I didn’t even know that potatoes were an industry in Manawa. Pickles, yes; potatoes, no.

The white clapboard building in the distance is just across the railroad tracks, and you can see it in the extreme left of the top photo on the page for the train depot. My brother reckons this for a building that was used right up until the 1970’s, when it burned down. Lots of burning buildings in my town.

The dark building in the middle background was part of the co-op when I knew it. The bay window out front was a place to operate a set of scales built into the pavement.

The one-story building in the foreground may have been part of the co-op, or possibly part of the pickle factory ... or it may have been long gone by the time I lived in Manawa.

Best guess on where the photographer’s standing: About the same spot where the co-op and pickle factory stood — west side of Depot Street, just north of the railroad tracks.
