The Eleanor Apartments on the 400 block of North Frances Street. An eye-catching old flatiron apartment block a short walk from the University campus. The Latest Entries (updated 3/6/08)
The Charles King House on the 200 block of West Gilman Street. The first house on Mansion Hill I looked at that made me wonder, “That wasn’t built to be a block of flats. That was a house. Whose house was that?” The answer wasn’t easy to find until I blundered across the story of Harold Langhammer, mover and shaker (literally!). The story got weirder with Charles King’s bizarre death.
The Bernhard Mautz House on the 100 block of West Gilman Street. Paint company founder Bernhard Mautz commissioned Claude and Starck to design this beautiful old prairie-style mansion. I’m still wondering, though: Why pink?
The Frank G. Brown House on the 100 block of East Gorham Street. The story of the Frank G. Brown House starts with the decay and demolition of Bejamin Walker’s faux-medieval castle on the shore of Lake Mendota.
The Adolph Marschall House on the five hundred block of North Pinckney Street. When you think of Wisconsin cheese, you should think of Adolph Marschall and the runaway success of his rennet manufactory on Proudfit Street. |
